1980s (?) Olympia Traveler Deluxe in Cyrillic
I feel like I should preface this by saying I've never actually worked on a machine in a foreign dialect before. This Olympia, which I feel like is 1980s according to the TDB was not working when it fell into my hands for repair. First of all, the frame rust had severely discolored the white plastic giving the entire machine an ugly yellow appearance. Secondly, the carriage would not stick. It kept wanting to fly to the right.
Here you're able to see some of the rust that was causing issues.
Cleaning the rust off was relatively easy. Fixing the escapement was not. All in all it just needed a replacement spring to hold it all together as you typed. I unfortunately didn't document that part of the process. After that it was just general cleaning. Lots and lots of cleaning. Except for key whitening, I wasn't being paid to do that :)
It was a fun and easy project, took a couple of hours only, and the results were very nice. As a whole, I don't think this is a machine I would personally want to own. It has a springy kind of action and a very loud and cheap sound to it. Nothing about this machine stuck me as satisfying to use, though many others beg to differ. Another thing I'll note is the fact that this blog is way easier to edit and create on my computer, than it is to do so on my phone, which is what I had been doing. So yeah, my post quality is trash at best, but you aren't coming here for grade A writing, you're coming here to see typewriter photos and to make me feel bad about my lack of writing skills. :)
